The old landfill of Odense, The Stige Island Landfill, was closed for reception of waste in 1994. Up until 2006 the landfill was under closure. During this period the landfill was covered with at least 1 m clean soil.
The old landfill has been used for dumping waste for 27 years and it has a size of about 54 ha, and holds 10 million m3 of solid waste. Stige Island is surrounded on three sides by Odense Canal and Fiord and has a beautiful position and a unique nature. The landfill is today under reconstruction to a recreative area for the benefit of the citizens of Odense.
